The RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout is a chance to do something different, as a family, and get closer to nature at the same time.

It’s a chance to discover nature after dark by joining the RSPB for an amazing opportunity to sleep on the Ynys-hir nature reserve near Machynlleth on Saturday, July 27.
RSPB staff will be on hand to help families discover the wildlife awake when they are normally in bed. It’s a great way to discover camping and have fun-filled night with nature, but there’s a serious message, too.

Nature is in trouble: In the last 25 years, for example, almost half of our hedgehogs have disappeared. The RSPB believes that, if the next generation feel connected to nature, they will be more inspired to help fight for its future.
Those that are unable to attend the special events at RSPB nature reserves at Ynyshir, Conwy and Newport Wetlands can arrange their own Big Wild Sleepout in their back garden.
RSPB Ynys-hir is planning an action-packed evening of wildlife activities and a night under canvas on July 27. After setting up camp and cooking dinner, families will spend the evening pond dipping and making willow feeders.
Once it’s dark, families will set off to see what’s about when they are usually asleep. Before tucking themselves up in their tents, they will toast marshmallows and spot favourite stars in the night sky.
After breakfast and decamping, families can follow the clues and discover more about Ynys-hir on a nature treasure trail.

Families can also discover their wild side at RSPB Ynys-hir every Wednesday in August when bug hunts, pond dipping and nature crafts will be on offer from 2pm-3.30pm. The Wild Challenge Wednesdays are suitable for children aged four to 11 years and cost £4 per child and £2 for accompanying adults. Call 01654 700222 to book a place.
Jean Napier will also be holding a Landscape Photography workshop at RSPB Ynys-hir on Saturday, July 20.
The magnificent Snowdonia National Park, where she has lived for more than 25 years, is the main inspiration for her work. The huge variety of landscapes within the park vary from wild coasts, beautiful beaches, mountainous areas, marshes and green valleys.
The landscape and views of RSPB Ynys-hir will be the inspiration for this workshop.
People attending the workshop should take their own equipment as well as a packed lunch, although drinks and afternoon cake will be provided.
