Tech & the internet leading to sharp increase in freelance workers

It has never been easier for people to start their own business and become their own boss so it is no surprise that so many people are looking to go freelance.

There was a whopping 31% annual rise for people looking to become self-employed in 2018 leading to a figure of 4.8 million self-employed workers in the UK – this means that freelance workers now make up a significant amount of the UK economy.

    Freelance Perks

There are many reasons why an individual may look to go freelance but the most common reason is that it puts you in complete control of your work and earnings. This can provide great flexibility and a greater work-life balance that can be hard to achieve in a full-time employed role. Additionally, this makes it easier for people to turn their hobbies and interests into careers with an enormous rise in roles such as dog walkers, beauticians and home bakers.

    Tech & the Internet

There has been a sharp increase in the number of people starting their own businesses because it is easier than ever in today’s technologically-advanced age. The internet has made it possible for people to set up and run their own companies even from the comfort of their own home with ecommerce businesses being the most notable example (and an industry which continues to grow at an astonishing rate).

    Multi-Synchronised Platforms

Setting up and running an ecommerce store from home can be relatively straightforward and it is also a business venture which can be affordable to launch. Technology can make this possible through the use of intelligent multi-synchronised platforms which allows for courier services where you can ship across multiple platforms, such as Amazon, eBay, Etsy etc.

    Support

Another reason that so many people are starting their own business ventures is that there is so much information and guidance easily available online. There are endless websites, blog posts, online communities and entrepreneurs on social media which can make it simple to learn how to set up your own business, get personalised advice and connect with fellow entrepreneurs.

    No Experience Needed

Previously, businesses were only started by entrepreneurs who have studied and planned extensively to start their own companies but now you need to experience and a particular skill set to start a company which could go on to find great success. You can also easily outsource complex areas of the operation, such as marketing, accounting and web design to specialists (who are often freelance themselves).

It is easy to see more and more people enter the freelance economy because it can bring so many perks and allow people to follow their passions. The internet and technology have made this easier than ever and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for freelance workers and the UK economy over the coming years.
