The £64m investment will replace the existing school, and will be built on land next to the Leckwith Stadium in the Canton area of the city. It will be 10 form entry, accommodating up to 1,500 students between the age of 11 and 16, plus a sixth form.

It will also offer comprehensive sports facilities, including a multi-use games area, 3G pitches and a replacement indoor swimming pool, which is already extensively used by the local schools and community groups. These, and other facilities at the school, will be available for public use outside school hours.

Work is expected to be completed in the 2022/2023 Academic Year.

Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council, and Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry, said: “This announcement is an exciting milestone in the development of the new Fitzalan High School and kick starts the next phase of our Band B schools investment.

“We are looking forward to working with Kier to deliver a brand new school providing pupils with access to state-of-the art facilities and the highest quality learning environment. The scheme represents a significant investment in the Canton area and will ensure the local community will also benefit from excellent, modern amenities.

“Jointly funded by the Welsh Government, Band B represents the largest ever single investment in our schools. Through this investment we can build on the momentum from the £164m we have put into new schools over the last five years, and take our 21st Century Schools and Education Programme to another level.”

Anthony Irving, Managing Director, Kier Regional Building Western and Wales said: “We are proud to be working in partnership with Cardiff Council to provide a facility where young people can learn and develop in an inspirational and collaborative environment.

The new school and sports complex will help shape the futures of young people in Cardiff for years to come and continues our commitment to delivering a legacy within the city where we plan to deliver apprenticeships and training opportunities throughout the project”.
