University of Wales Trinity Saint David launches ‘Made for Uni’ podcast series

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) has launched a series of podcasts to engage and inspire current and future students.

The series ‘Made for Uni’ discusses a variety of topics, with the first podcast offering a number of suggestions on how to look after yourself – both physically and mentally – during this strange and difficult time. With the majority of us now staying at home, this podcast is a great way of hearing how some of our students are keeping themselves busy.

The first two programmes are presented by two third-year students, Siobhan Eleri and Chloe Jones.  Siobhan and Chloe, BA Primary Education with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) students studying at the University’s Carmarthen campus, have enjoyed the challenge of presenting the podcasts and were in their element participating in the venture.

“We have really enjoyed the experience as we’ve never before had an opportunity to record with specialist equipment and to create podcasts,” said the two students.

“It’s an excellent idea, and it was a privilege to take part. Since we often listen to podcasts, it was an exciting experience simply to go for it and create one of our own, on a very topical subject. The podcast succeeds in reaching out to a range of listeners, from students to parents, and does so in Welsh and English. Since we now have to stay at home, hearing any tips that other people might have for keeping busy is a really good idea.

“As part of the podcast, we discussed our plans for this period of staying at home and the types of things we’ll be doing to keep busy,” add Siobhan and Chloe.

“We discussed the importance of keeping fit or going for a walk to ensure a healthy mind and body.  Other fun ideas included encouraging people to start investing in new interests such as reading, learning a new language or cooking. It was important to emphasise the great advantage of living in the digital age, as well as our ability to use the internet, to learn new things, to go to Pinterest for ideas or to use Skype to communicate with family and friends. Even perhaps joining the Wales-wide public group ‘Côr-ona’ on Facebook! Since we are Primary Education students, we were also able to discuss one or two tips of our own on how to keep young children occupied.  It’s important that children keep to a timetable so that they have some structure in their lives, as well as keeping up with their academic work.

“During the podcast, we spoke with two other students who live on the University’s Carmarthen campus. We interviewed them about their plans for the next few weeks and what had been organised regarding their lectures. This part of the podcast was great, especially when we heard that one student was keen to play the harmonica for us – live!

“So far, we have been encouraging listeners to share their ideas on how to keep busy, so that we can help each other during this challenging period. Therefore, keep safe and listen to our podcast! We have thoroughly enjoyed and greatly appreciate the opportunity of being part of the series,” add Siobhan and Chloe
