To mark Refugee Week 2018, the council invited all schools in Cardiff to write, perform and send in a video of their jingle, showcasing their welcoming ethos.

The Allensbank primary pupils and teachers faced stiff competition, with the judges commenting: “It was great to see young learners get so engaged and enthusiastic about this jingle competition.

“It shows they have great empathy, and it is great to see young learners wanting to make a difference and wanting to create a welcoming environment within their schools – thanks to all!”

Headteacher of Allensbank Primary School,Miss Jenny Drogan, said:

“We are delighted as a school to be recognised as winners of the jingle competition. The competition perfectly complements the ongoing work across the school linked to Refugee Week and also our whole school progress towards the School of Sanctuary award. Our Year 3 pupils wrote the jingle independently and are very proud of their achievement. I would like to thank them and their teachers for all their hard work.”

Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council and Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry, said:

“Congratulations to all the children and teachers for taking part in helping to mark Refugee Week in such a fantastic way.

“Well done Allensbank primary, I can’t wait to hear their winning jingle when I next visit the school.”
