Walk Together in Wales to help stop people dying of bowel cancer

A national charity is calling on people in Wales to put their best foot forward in a five-mile walk to raise funds for vital services and lifesaving research to help stop people dying of bowel cancer.

Bowel Cancer UK’s Walk Together events usually take place in cities around the UK in September, with hundreds of people joining together to raise money for the charity. Because the coronavirus pandemic has put a stop to large-scale events, this year the charity is encouraging people to do the walk in their own time, in their local area, during the month of September.

Walk Together gives everyone the perfect opportunity to get outside and walk at their own pace at a time to suit them – it could be a familiar walk which is done regularly, or a completely new route.

Michael Locke, Wales Fundraising Manager at Bowel Cancer UK, said: Bowel Cancer UK’s large events have been cancelled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, so instead we’re urging people across Wales to Walk Together to show support for friends or family who are undergoing treatment for bowel cancer, and to remember their loved ones.

“You can do a Walk Together event however you choose – on your own, or with a small group of family or friends. However you decide to take part, just make sure you follow government guidance on social distancing.

“Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in Wales, with more than 2,200 people diagnosed with the disease in the country each year. But bowel cancer is treatable and curable, especially if it’s diagnosed early.

“We may have had to change our plans for 2020, but Walk Together will still be a memorable event, bringing people affected by bowel cancer together to raise vital funds for Bowel Cancer UK’s research, services and support, and helping to stop over 900 people dying from the disease each year in Wales.”
