Baccarat has survived the test of time, evolving from its humble 15th century Italian beginnings, to the online gaming sensation that many of us know and love today. Since the game has been around for such a long time and has developed an impressive reputation, it is popular among experienced players and beginners on sites like Karamba live casino, for example.

Because of this longevity, there are plenty of specific terms involved in the game and if you’ve never played the game before, this can make starting out a little tricky! To help you to get started, and to ensure that you’re in the know about the most important Baccarat terms, we’ve put together a handy glossary that you can refer back to when playing online Baccarat.

    Baccarat

The goal in a game of Baccarat is to try to beat the banker by forming a hand as close to a total of nine as possible. Baccarat is the Italian word for zero and as a result, the word also represents the worst possible hand in the game

    Banker Bet

In Baccarat there are three bets that you can make and one of these is the Banker Bet. This wager will payout 1:1 if you’re bet is successful, and in terms of odds, this is the best bet that can be made in the game.

    Burning

This is the process of dispensing the top three cards in a deck, when you shuffle the cards before a new game starts.

    Carte

In a classic game of Baccarat, this French term is used to request a new card from the dealer.

    Coup

Another term that reflects the game’s French influence, a Coup is a round of the game that consists of a player hand and a banker hand.

    Dealer

You’ll probably be familiar with this term, but like in the majority of table games, the dealer plays an important role in the running and facilitation of the game. Additionally, in a game of Baccarat, the dealer is vital because they play along during gameplay and as a player, the aim is to try to beat their hand with your own.

    Down Card

We reckon that you probably could have figured this one out for yourselves, but a down card is a card that lies on the table faced down.

    Flat Bet

This bet type requires the player to place a bet that is not based on the premise that their hand is a winning or losing one, rather that it is the same no matter what they hold.

    La Grande

In a typical table game, the game’s name is derived from the best hand that can be achieved, however, as we’ve already mentioned, Baccarat is named after the worst possible hand in the game. The best hand in Baccarat is known as ‘La Grande’, which translates from French to mean ‘The Big One’. This is the most desirable hand, since it totals nine.

    Tie

The third Baccarat bet is a wager on the possibility of the hand ending in a tie. This would result in both the banker and the player having their bets returned to them, however, should you bet on a tie and you win the hand, you could be paid out 8:1 or 9:1.

Gambling can be addictive, please play responsibly.
