A Look into Wales’ Growing Aviation Industry

At the time of writing, air travel within Wales is an ever-growing sector. To date, and according to Airports Base, there are 14 different airports throughout Wales, the biggest of which is located in Cardiff. In recent times, the country’s aviation sector has gone from strength to strength, and we’re going to look at the factors responsible for this 21st-century growth.

Broader Changes Enhance Likelihood of Tourism

While local expansions and improvements have enhanced Wales’ aviation sector, alterations to European air travel regulations may also have played a pivotal role in recent growth. However, regulations can be tricky to navigate. This has led to market specialists, Flightright, becoming central to understanding regulations and enforcing customer rights for over a decade, achieving a payout total of over £270 million in that time. Most notably, in case of flight delay, travellers flying between European airports are protected should any unforeseen hold-ups occur. As such, prospective tourists can now fly to and from Wales knowing that they’re entitled to EU flight delay compensation upon making a flight delay claim.

How Long of a Flight Delay for Compensation?

However, if you are left waiting for a flight, you may start wondering how long a flight delay is needed for compensation entitlement. The relevant legislation states that, along with other criteria, flight delay compensation is claimable if a flight lands at its intended destination three hours later than planned.

How Much Compensation for a Flight Delay?

Moreover, regarding how much compensation for a flight delay, in the event a three or more-hour wait, each passenger is entitled to a pay-out totalling between £225 and £542. The reasoning behind the variable totals concerns the distance of the flight. So, the longer the flight, the greater the potential pay-out.

    Economic Development and Airline Expansion

Over the past few years, Cardiff Airport has thrived. According to data from the airport’s official website, the site recorded a 10 percent growth in passenger figures from the first quarter of 2018 to the same period in 2019. Impressively, following an increase in travelling, Wales’ only domestic and international airport ranked seventh in a list of the UK’s 21 most successful sites that annually assist over one million passengers.

Local improvements have undoubtedly played a significant role in expanding Wales’ aviation industry. Additionally, it speaks volumes about the upward trajectory of the market that Wizz Air UK have opted for Cardiff Airport to be its fourth base in the United Kingdom. The subsidiary of one of Europe’s fastest-growing green airlines will create 40 new jobs at the country’s primary airport, according to the BBC. Ultimately, it’s a testament to the aviation industry in Wales that Wizz Air has sought to open a permanent base in Cardiff. In terms of routes, the airline will introduce nine new travel options, including seasonal routes to both Corfu and Palma, as per UK Aviation News.

Well Placed to Enjoy Long-Term Success

As things stand, Wales’ air travel industry has the necessary foundations to enjoy sustained long-term growth from both a passenger and profits standpoint. While the availability of flight delay compensation won’t hinder tourism figures, Wizz Air’s expansion undoubtedly indicates that the coming years could be the best yet for Cardiff Airport.
