The 70th anniversary of the birth of heritage railways was celebrated at a ceremony in Mid Wales earlier this month. On May 14, 1951, the first ever train in railway preservation left Wharf Station in Tywyn for the short trip to Rhydyronen, establishing Talyllyn Railway as the world’s first volunteer run railway. Staff and pupils have signed their names into the annals of one of Mold’s primary schools, as a major stage of the new extension is completed and part of the redevelopment starts to take shape.  Pupils and staff at Ysgol Glanrafon, along with members of Flintshire County Council, have written their names onto a number of the structured insulated panels (SIPs) which will make up the £4m extension and remodelling scheme being built by Wynne Construction. Three more men aged 18, 21, and 23 have been arrested in connection with violent disorder in Mayhill on Thursday, May 20. This bring the total number of arrests to seven and further arrests are expected over the coming days. Of the seven who have been arrested, two – aged 21 and 23 – remain in police custody and five have been released on bail with a number of strict conditions including a night-time curfew. Covid-safe face-to-face events and activities will be reintroduced from Monday, May 24 on a phased basis, in line with Welsh Government guidance. South Wales Police is investigating the scenes of violent disorder which happened in the Mayhill area of Swansea last night (Thursday 20th May). The police response to the incident was immediate and officers trained to deal with public order incidents were deployed to the scene. A temporary plan for Swansea’s St David’s Shopping Centre site including a pop-up park has been given the green light. Swansea Council’s Cabinet has approved a two-year scheme for the site, pending its regeneration in the longer term. Work on the pop-up park will start this summer ahead of its completion in the autumn. Developed by the council in partnership with Natural Resources Wales and Urban Foundry, it will include a rain garden and a mixture of planting, living roofs, seating and bike shelters. Horse-mad pupils can now bring their ponies with them to a top North Wales private school after its equestrian centre re-opened this month. The right royal £30,000 renovation comes 15 years after Olympic eventing gold medallist Princess Anne opened the facilities at what is now Myddelton College in Denbigh. A leading bakery has launched a £3,000-a-year scholarship programme to help raise standards in the food industry. The first recipient of the Jones Village Bakery’s bursary is Jo Flower, 21, a food technology and product development student at Harper Adams University in Newport in Shropshire. Compass Cymru has announced a new surplus food partnership with Cardiff-based food charity, FareShare Cymru. This partnership will encourage Compass’ sites across Wales to donate surplus food to communities in need. Projects which receive food from FareShare Cymru include community centres, foodbanks and homeless shelters. The food FareShare Cymru distributes – such as fresh fruit, veg, meat and non-perishable items including pasta and tins – is surplus, but still good to eat and would otherwise go to waste.
