Professional footballer and coach Jess Fishlock MBE has been honoured with a Fellowship of Aberystwyth University. Raised in Llanrumney, Fishlock recently became the first footballer to win 150 international caps for Wales.  Just this week she made history once again by breaking Wales’ all-time goal-scoring record. Two men have been arrested following a serious assault on Princess Way, Swansea in the early hours of Wednesday morning (July 17). One man has been taken to hospital and his condition is life-threatening. A 26-year-old man from Frome, Somerset has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. A 27-year-old man from Bath, Somerset has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent. Both men are currently in custody. A section of Princess Way has been closed for forensics to attend the scene.

Visitors to the Royal Welsh Show can now save money on the entrance fee by travelling to the showground with Transport for Wales. Customers buying rail tickets to Builth Road station either from a booking office or onboard the train can also purchase an entrance ticket to the Royal Welsh Show. Prices are £31 for an adult ticket (entry at the gate is £36) and £10 for children and organisers of the Royal Welsh Show will once again be running buses from Builth Road to the showground. Up until the 28th of July, visitors to Nantclwyd y Dre historic house and gardens (Ruthin), have the opportunity to get involved in a range of free events and activities organised by the Denbighshire Heritage Service team as part of the annual Festival of Archaeology. Swansea Council’s free bus initiative is back for the summer holidays, offering free travel within the city. The Free Ride Swansea offer means residents will be able to travel on public transport in the city for a total of 20 days between July 26 – August 26 and operates during each weekend (Fri – Mon). Pembrokeshire Music Service brought the ABC of Opera to Haverfordwest for school children to enjoy a special live performance recently. ABC of Opera, founded by renowned opera singer Mark Llewelyn Evans, performed The Crazy Classicals and the Curse at three shows on 9th and 10th July. Almost 1,000 primary school pupils delighted in the fusion of pantomime and opera where the evil Queen of the Night, escaping from Mozart’s Opera the Magic Flute, tries to banish music for ever. The annual summer Tenby park and ride service returns from this Saturday, July 20th. The handy service operated by Pembrokeshire County Council runs between 11am and 6pm every day until Friday September 13th. Buses operate from The Salterns car park and call at The Green and South Parade. The bus service is free with customers just needing to pay for parking as normal. Buses run approximately every 15 minutes (with exception of one 45 minute driver break per day, taken when demand allows).

Newport is one step closer to hosting Eisteddfod yr Urdd in 2027 after the council’s cabinet backed plans for the city to host. At its meeting this week, the cabinet agreed in principle to Newport hosting the event. Potential locations for the Eisteddfod are being discussed and plans will be put forward at a public meeting at 5:30pm on Thursday 12 September at Tredegar House, where the local community will be invited along to hear more about the proposals and to formally accept the invitation to host.  Eisteddfod yr Urdd is one of Europe’s largest youth touring festivals.
