    Is Playing Bingo Gambling?

Bingo has been classified as a form of gambling by many countries across the world. In the UK, for example, it has its own heading under the Gambling Act 2005. In this Act it doesn’t have a statutory specific definition and it’s determined to be any version of the game – no matter what name the game is given. This is a very vague definition and it is one that gets more difficult to understand due to the expanding and rapid development of the game.

Anyone owning a premises for bingo with people playing for prizes must apply for a license for gaming. There are regulations set up that place limits on the prizes being offered as well as the participation fees. In some cases the players will be trying to win a prize pool based on the money spent by the group of bingo players but at other times prizes may be offered that don’t reflect the money spent by the group. This is known as “prize bingo” and falls under the category of “prize gaming”.

Bingo is distinguished from casino gaming and requires a different operating license than a casino. In order to get the license there are 3 factors that must be in place first to qualify:

    • The games must have an endpoint that is clearly defined
    • Bingo games must have equal chance playing set up.
    • There must be a degree of participation involved

Individuals are playing against other players and there must be no bank or “house” involved. Everyone should have the same probability of winning or losing, making it a complete game of chance. This is what sets it apart from casino games where you are often playing against the house. Another rule for bingo is to have an endpoint in place that all players understand clearly. At a casino, you can gamble for long periods of time and for as long as you want.

As well, to distinguish bingo from a lottery, there must be participation required in order to. Players must mark their cards and yell out “Bingo!” when they win.

    Online Bingo Gaming

As online bingo games have evolved so have the games offered for bingo online. More and more people are visiting online bingo sites due to the pandemic. While they were in lockdown they were missing their bingo games at regular bingo halls and headed online instead. Many have become accustomed to playing online as a result and prefer to enjoy the game in the comfort of their own homes.

With the new modern formats for bingo online the player still has to participate in order to win and all the other rules still apply. As with casino sites, you’ll need to register and verify your personal details. Anyone that is under the age of 18 is not allowed to play bingo so the website needs to be sure that you meet the age requirements as well as understand that this is still a form of gambling.

Fortunately, there are no verification bingo sites you can visit when you don’t want to send in all of your information. This way, you can still enjoy the game you love inside your home at your convenience.

Is Playing Bingo Really a Form of Gambling?

Many people do not feel that it is. They view it more as a way to spend some time with friends and a great way to relax for an evening. In the eyes of the law, however, bingo is a type of gambling – although in a more moderate form. Whether you think it’s gambling or not, the bingo websites have to adhere to the letter of the law in order to stay open and to provide you with the entertainment you want.
