Looking at Wales’ Rich History of Wood Carving and Sculpting

Wood carving is one of the oldest art forms known to man. Although the exact origins of the activity are unknown, it’s believed that the practise came to fruition in Egypt around 2500 B.C. Following that, Late Gothic era carvings in Germany throughout the late 14th and early 15th centuries played a pivotal role in heightening the appeal of wooden sculptures, as per Visual Arts Cork.

Because of the early foundations, modern-day sculptors can now further the reach of carving. As such, the practice reached new-found levels of popularity within Wales at the turn of the millennium. So, let’s take a look at the country’s history of carving and consider the importance of wearing protective outdoor clothing.

    Creating a Competitive Environment

It’s a testament to the rising popularity of wood sculpting in Wales that, after losing his job as a steelworker in the 90s, Chris Wood opted for a career change and pursued the art of chainsaw sculpting. To date, Wood has established himself as one of the best in his profession, and that’s evident from his creation for the Gwent Levels. As per Living Levels, the former steelworker made a 2.8-meter-tall fisherman to celebrate the area’s history of traditional fisheries.

Interestingly, over the past few decades, the art form has become increasingly competitive throughout Wales. For example, for over 30 years, the Royal Welsh Show has hosted a Tree Falling Competition. According to Chainsaw Training, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society organise the event, and it is open to all chainsaw operators in Wales.

Not only that, but Wales is also the home to the Welsh Axemen. The Axe Racing Club – which has been in operation for over thirty years – competes in a whole host of different practices. Along with chainsaw carving, the group travel across the United Kingdom to participate in stock saw racing, under hand events, and much more.

    Being Prepared to Compete

For those who are intrigued by the activity and are considering venturing into either competitive or professional sculpting, it’s imperative to have the appropriate protective clothing. Given the hazards of operating a chainsaw, safeguarding user health is of utmost importance. Make no mistake about it, if wood carving is your job, then protective clothing is a must. Through companies like Engelbert Strauss, prospective consumers can take advantage of their 72 years of experience and purchase state-of-the-art work wear safety wear.

If you’re wondering how to repair outdoor clothing, such as the Forestry cut protect.bib & brace e.s.vision cross, only the upper layer of the product is fixable. This can be done through stitching together any tears in the product. Fundamentally, the reason for this is that any work done to the protective insert can impact its effectiveness as site work trousers.

While wearing the appropriate clothing is pivotal, some may also be asking how does sun-protective clothing work. Given that chainsaw work predominantly occurs outside, minimising heat-orientated damage is also essential. Products such as the e.s.Functional cap UV feature factor 50+ security, which provides the ideal protection in the summer months.

    Why Not Get Involved?

As evident from the above, Wales has plenty to offer regarding wood sculpting. Whether you want to participate or watch the experts at work, there’s a range of events to enjoy throughout the country. That said, remember, if you’re thinking of trying your hand at the art form, don’t forget to purchase work wear safety wear!
