The Council has delivered first-class education facilities fit for the 21st Century thanks to a multi-million pound investment – including brand new schools for Cwmaman, Tonyrefail, Tonypandy and Porth for the new academic year.

Thanks to huge joint funding through #RCTinvest and Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education programme, fantastic £85m facilities are being delivered across Rhondda and Tonyrefail in 2018/19 – along with a £7.2m investment in Cwmaman. Pupils will benefit from many of these new facilities when they return from their summer holiday in September 2018, including:

    • The brand new £7.2m Cwmaman Primary School benefitting from a new 21st Century Schools building, off Glanaman Road.
    • The new 3-16 Ysgol Nantgwyn in Tonypandy which has a brand new primary building and a remodelled secondary school, on the site of the former Tonypandy Community College.
    • The new 3-19 Tonyrefail Community School which consists of a brand new primary building, while a new secondary building and remodelled Grade II Listed building will be completed by Spring 2019.
    • The new 3-16 Porth Community School, with a new primary building, refurbished and redecorated secondary building, and a 3G sports pitch.
    • A major investment in new sixth form facilities and classrooms at Treorchy Comprehensive – including a state-of-the-art science block.
    • A major investment in Ferndale Comprehensive including new science, Design & Technology and ICT classrooms, and a 3G sports pitch.
    • Remodelling and refurbishments at YGG Llwyncelyn, while major projects progress at Cymmer Primary and YGG Tonyrefail.

A number of improvements in more schools across the Rhondda are also being delivered from September 2018. A full list of these projects, and latest progress reports for the works, can be found here.

Councillor Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said:

“These are very exciting times for education in Rhondda Cynon Taf, as pupils and staff will begin to benefit from the latest wave of 21st Century Schools investment. In total, £85m improvements are being delivered in Rhondda and Tonyrefail, as well as a £7.2m investment in Cwmaman – thanks to joint Welsh Government funding.

“A number of ambitious projects have been delivered to create first-class learning environments for our young people and their teachers, to improve educational outcomes and present new opportunities.

“This includes brand new ‘through schools’ for Porth, Tonypandy and Tonyrefail, new sixth form facilities for Treorchy, remodelled specialist teaching areas for Ferndale, and a state-of-the-art new primary school for Cwmaman – all delivered in time for September.

“Meanwhile, primary pupils in Llwyncelyn will also return from their summer holiday to improved facilities, while projects at Cymmer Primary, YGG Tonyrefail and the secondary element of Tonyrefail Community School are scheduled to be delivered over the coming months.

“I’m looking forward to visiting the schools shortly to see our pupils benefitting from their new school environments. The Council wants to ensure more and more pupils, for generations to come, benefit from these new education facilities and Cabinet will, in the coming weeks, consider more options to deliver 21st Century Schools funding in further communities.”
