All weather sports pitch announced for the Bont

Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart announced funding for the £200,000 project at the town’s comprehensive school at a meeting of full council.

The pitch will replace the former tennis courts within the school grounds that have fallen into disrepair.

The school will use the pitch during the day, and it will be available for wider community use out of school hours.

As well as funding from the council the two local ward members will use their share of the council’s newly launched £1m play fund.

A share of this pot is available to all councillors in Swansea to improve play facilities in their communities.

Cllr Stewart said: “I’m delighted to be able to announce this investment, and deliver on a promise we made a few years ago, which will be of great benefit to the pupils at the school and the wider community.

“The additional support from the council in addition to contributions from the play fund and local members will mean £200,000 will be available to deliver an all-weather sports pitch in Pontarddulais.”

“This year more than ever has highlighted the need for good quality safe places for play, leisure and exercise and that’s why we introduced the new play fund to help deliver better play facilities across Swansea. I’m sure this new all-weather facility in the Bont will be widely welcomed and well used.

“This council has invested heavily in sports provision in Swansea. We have delivered new pitches at Morriston, Pentrehafod and Penyrheol. We are also working to support additional all-weather sports facilities at Cefn Hengoed, Dylan Thomas, Olchfa and next to YG Bryntawe.”

Pontarddulais Comprehensive headteacher Gareth Rees said: “This is a wonderful and much needed facility being gifted to the school, we are very grateful for the funding. It will ensure that our pupils and citizens in our wider community will be able to play and exercise, regardless of the weather conditions, boosting their health and wellbeing.

“The ongoing pandemic has thwarted a large swathe of the school’s and local sports provision. We really look forward to when everyone can come together again and use the facility, bringing enjoyment and fun to many people for years to come.”
