City road closed due to landslip to be rebuilt

A Swansea road, closed to vehicles since October 2019, is set to rebuilt to make it safe again.

Graig Road in Morriston has houses along one side of the road and a grass banking along the opposite side. Following a landslip in 2019, Swansea Council closed a section of the route to vehicles where the slip had occurred.

Since then the Council has been working with geotechnical experts to assess the stability of the route and come up with a solution to stabilise the banking and reopen to the road.

A report to Cabinet on Thursday 19 November will seek to recommend a scheme worth £550,000 that will include building a retaining wall, new drainage works, a lighting scheme and work to provide access for emergency vehicles through a narrow section of the route.

Mark Thomas, Cabinet Member for Environment Enhancement & Infrastructure Management, said: “While the landslip has not posed an immediate threat for residents living nearby, it has been necessary to stop vehicles travelling along the road – which potentially could have worsened the collapse.

“We have been working with experts to come up with a solution which will stabilise the banking and make the local area safe again.

“Residents have also been kept updated on our progress so they are reassured about the work we are doing.”
