New hub provides extra support to young jobseekers in Cardiff

Cardiff-based jobseekers under the age of 25 can now access extra support in their search for work thanks to a new Youth Hub that’s been launched in Butetown.

The hub, which is based at the Butetown Pavillion Youth Centre on Dumballs Road, is part of the UK Government’s £30bn Plan for Jobs. This will be discussed by the Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions, Therese Coffey, and the Welsh and Scottish Governments’ Ministers for Economy, Ken Skates and Fiona Hyslop, during a virtual meeting today.

Young jobseekers across the Welsh capital are among those in many locations across Britain, who can now benefit from accessing a local Youth Hub. The comprehensive service will provide jobseekers with support to find work, reskill for alternative careers, and raise awareness of training opportunities.

The Cardiff hub will operate five days a week and, by working closely with Cardiff City Council and other partners, work coaches will also offer guidance on wider issues related to unemployment, including budgeting, debt management and housing.

Work and Pensions Secretary, Therese Coffey, said:

“As part of our commitment to building back better, and our comprehensive Plan for Jobs, we are opening dozens of Youth Hubs like this one in Cardiff across the country, to give young people the support and opportunities they need to find work.”

John Sourlis, a Work Coach who will be based full-time in the new Cardiff Youth Hub, added:

“Our new hub is where young people can feel comfortable about getting help and advice from people who understand what they’re going through. We are looking forward to working with Cardiff City Council and other partners to offer the support each young individual needs to move them closer to work.

“We’re not going to treat every young jobseeker the same – we know each will have their own ambition and we want to help them with that as best we can in these tough times.”

Work has been undertaken to ensure the hub is Covid-secure, and visitors attending appointments will be asked to follow safety measures that have been put in place to protect public health.
