Residents could be asked for their views on exciting proposals for a new 21st century leisure and well-being centre in Newport city centre.
The vision for a key riverfront site not only proposes a new leisure centre but will also facilitate a £90m state-of-the-art college campus to be created on the site of the present leisure centre.
On Wednesday, cabinet will consider whether to ask members of the public, customers and businesses for their views on the proposal for a modern, purpose-built leisure and well-being centre.
A new centre would offer much-improved facilities including an up-to-date pool, fitness suite and health and fitness areas. Its new location would also be in the city centre and accessible to people from across the city.
Surveys have shown that the pool hall at the 36-year-old Newport Centre is beyond viable repair.
It is being recommended that the site is transferred to Coleg Gwent for a new city centre campus bringing hundreds of students and staff into the city centre. This enhanced learning environment would be close to the University of South Wales campus, forming the Newport Knowledge Quarter.
An application to part-fund the new leisure facilities has been made to Welsh Government. The rest of the cost would be met through a phased reduction in the subsidy paid to Newport Live and around £4m from council reserves.
