South Wales Police has issued a Section 60 Notice which gives officers the authority to stop and search anyone in Canton, Riverside and Grangetown tonight (Wednesday, December 30).

The Section 60 Notice took effect from 8.02pm and will remain until 11pm.

The Notice authorises any Constable in uniform, within that locality to exercise the powers under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994:

    • to stop and search any pedestrian, or anything carried by them for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments without good reason, or
    • to stop and search any vehicle, its driver and any passenger, for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments.

This decision has been taken after information has been provided of violent crimes having been committed by a group of young males in the Wells Street area of Canton. One woman has reported that her teenage son has been a victim of a robbery by this group. Officers are also investigating reports of an assault in the area. Witnesses have described the group as carrying knives.

Section 60 is aimed at preventing serious violence, to find dangerous instruments or to apprehend persons carrying weapons   There is a real concern that this matter could escalate.

Anyone with any information with regard a robbery, assault, or persons carrying weapons is asked to contact us on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 08090 555111.  Or you can direct message us via social media channels quoting occurrence 2000469361.
