Pontsticill Road in Merthyr Tydfil will remain closed while remediation works are carried out, with construction due to start in the week commencing 28 September 2026.
A scheme has been designed and agreed in principle by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Natural Resources Wales and the relevant private landowners. A tender process has been completed and the contract awarded to Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Limited.
The works will include edge beam replacement and strengthening within the roadway; raising and reconstruction of the carriageway to allow new drainage channels; construction of a reinforced earth slope and associated drainage infrastructure; installation of several block stone cascades to manage surface water run-off and formalise existing steep channels; replacement of manholes installed above the landslip area; and installation of five new highway culverts to replace damaged culverts below Pontsticill Road.
To allow the work to be done safely, Pontsticill Road will need to stay closed for the duration of the construction period. Planned completion is currently anticipated by the end of March 2027.
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council said further updates will be provided over the coming months. The council apologised for any inconvenience and thanked people for their continued patience, understanding and cooperation while the works are carried out.
