GP surgeries in Bridgend to support vaccination roll-out

All GP practices across Bridgend county borough have offered to take part in delivering the coronavirus vaccine programme.

The AstraZeneca vaccine, which is easier to use in care homes and GP surgeries as it is stored at normal fridge temperatures, began to be rolled out in the county borough this week with some of the first doses given at Oak Tree Surgery in Brackla.

Other surgeries will soon start to give the vaccine to priority groups, which initially includes residents aged over 80.

Residents and staff at Picton Court Care Home in Porthcawl and Brocastle Manor Care Home have also received the vaccine this week.

Surgeries will play a crucial role in delivering the Covid-19 vaccines to priority groups within our communities and I’m pleased all GP practices in Bridgend county borough have indicated that they want to help deliver doses to patients. Supplies of the vaccine will build over the coming weeks and months with all practices being able to vaccinate residents in priority groups as soon as possible. Please be patient – your surgery will be in touch with you when it is your turn.

Do not contact your GP practice to ask when you will have your vaccine – as patients in priority groups become eligible, they will be notified of their appointment by their surgery in the normal way they are contacted, i.e. telephone call, letter or text message. I would urge all residents who are offered the vaccine against this deadly disease to have it and not to miss their appointment. Our NHS is under extreme pressure at the moment and we must all do everything we can to help.

As it will take some time for everyone to be vaccinated, please continue to follow the rules on social distancing, hand washing, staying at home except for very limited purposes, and not meeting with people who you don’t live with or aren’t in your support bubble.

    Council Leader Huw David

The vaccine is given in two doses – you will be called back for your second dose within 12 weeks of having the first one.

When you have your Covid-19 vaccine, you will get a credit card-sized NHS Wales immunisation card, which will act as a reminder about your second dose and will also have details about how to report any side effects.
