Children with additional learning needs will be able to access creative wellbeing support throughout August through an innovative programme that uses Minecraft as a therapeutic tool.

Health is One, through its NeuroPathways service, has secured funding from Swansea Local Authority to deliver Minecraft-based wellbeing sessions over the summer holidays, with the programme expected to support over 30 young people.

The funding follows a successful pilot earlier this year, which used Minecraft to help children access emotional wellbeing support in a familiar and engaging space.

Building on the success of the pilot, the programme will return this summer, giving more young people the opportunity to explore emotions, build confidence and connect with others through online activities delivered within the Minecraft platform.

Sessions will be led by trained professionals using therapeutic techniques including emotional scaling, narrative building and co-regulation to help participants develop confidence, communication and problem-solving skills.

NeuroPathways is working with Ellie Finch, a specialist practitioner and trainer known for her work in digital and play-based therapeutic approaches.

Emma Davies, director at NeuroPathways at Health is One, said: “Many children, particularly neurodivergent children or those with additional learning needs, can find traditional forms of support difficult to access or engage with.

“But this pilot has shown us what’s possible when you meet children on their own terms. Watching young people who struggle in traditional settings thrive, collaborating, communicating and building confidence through something as simple as a game, has been genuinely exciting for our whole team. It’s exactly the kind of innovative, evidence-informed practice we want NeuroPathways to be known for.”

Ellie Finch, director of PlayMode Academy, said: “Minecraft can offer children a creative space where they can communicate and explore experiences in ways that do not rely on talking. For some children, particularly where conventional support hasn’t been designed with them in mind, that can make a real difference.

“When used safely and ethically, digital play can meet children where they feel most confident and comfortable, while still supporting therapeutic goals.”

Cllr Rebecca Fogarty, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Support, said: “This is a great example of how we are supporting groups and organisations to deliver activities and events suitable for all young people across Swansea as part of our #HereForYouThisSummer funding. I hope those taking part continue to enjoy and thrive thanks to these exciting and innovative sessions.”

Feedback from families involved in the pilot also highlighted the positive impact the sessions had on children’s confidence, enjoyment and sense of connection.

One parent shared: “Usually my son’s interactions are up and down while he’s online. One minute he’s happy and the next he is crying, so it was a breath of fresh air to hear him laughing the entire time.”

A second parent added: “I wish these were available every week.”

The additional funding will enable NeuroPathways and Ellie Finch to continue working together to provide innovative and accessible wellbeing support for more children with additional learning needs.
