More than 40 charities, volunteer and community groups tackling food poverty have successfully applied for grants from Swansea Council to support their work.
The funding will be used for a variety of schemes ranging from community gardens growing fresh produce to groups providing crisis support for people in urgent need of a meal.
Others work with families and individuals to give them the skills to prepare healthy and nutritious meals on a budget.
Some groups are using the money to invest in new equipment such as fridges, freezers, ovens and utensils while for others it will help with volunteer training and costs or transport.
In total £155,000 has been awarded following two rounds of applications to the Food Poverty Fund in December and January.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Supporting Communities, Alyson Pugh, said: “This money will make a big difference to these organisations who work tirelessly to support people in real need.
“Food poverty and insecurity is a real issue for many low income households and sadly the coronavirus pandemic of the last 12 months has meant there are more and more people who have seen their incomes reduced or even disappear.
“We are very fortunate in Swansea to have so many community and grassroots groups with innovative schemes that are there to help people in their time of need.
“On the one hand I’m pleased that as a council we are able to help them continue and expand their work but on the other it is sad that they are needed.
“We will continue to do all we can to help those in need and to support the charities and organisations who provide such vital services.”
