Lidl GB’s plans for a new and improved supermarket on St. Davids road in Cwmbran have now been granted with the store, set to replace the existing one on Woodside road.

As part of the company’s £1.3bn investment plans across Great Britain in 2021 and 2022, the new supermarket will be retaining all the existing employees from the Woodside store, and will create around five new roles for the area.

The store will feature a 1,410m² sales area and boast an instore bakery, customer toilets and 135 car parking spaces, including electric vehicle parking, and ample parking for bicycles. Construction of a new Stagecoach depot facility, planned for the adjacent site, will commence and once complete work will begin on the new Lidl store which is set to open in summer 2023. The current store on Woodside road will remain open until the new one is ready.

Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, Paul Hebblethwaite, commented: “We could not be more delighted to have finally received planning permission for a new store in Cwmbran. The new store is set to deliver an improved shopping experience and an even greater selection of our fresh, quality, great value products for the local area and we look forward to getting started on construction.  I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued patience and support, we very much look forward to opening our doors in the not too distant future.”

Lidl’s ongoing success shows no signs of slowing, with the latest Kantar Worldpanel results highlighting Lidl’s increase in sales year on year and market share of 5.7%.
