One of the UK’s leading independent insurance brokers, Towergate Insurance Brokers, has acquired the assets from Swansea-based Murton Alexander Insurance Services Ltd in a bid to boost its Welsh offering.

Founded in 1972 by Robin Pountney and now run by his son, Managing Director Rob Pountney, Murton Alexander is one of the longest serving independent insurance brokers in Wales, and one of the only companies to specialise in taxi cover. This acquisition will bolster Towergate’s local footprint, expertise and reach.

Murton Alexander’s taxi insurance offering, headed up by Lynne Thomas, has been hugely successful over the last 20 years and will be a great addition to Towergate’s portfolio.

The business purchase will also see the five-person team – Lynne Thomas, Daniel Lewis, Clare Davies, Will Pountney and Managing Director Rob Pountney – transfer to Towergate Insurance Brokers in Swansea. They will all be integrated within the Towergate team, allowing for a seamless transition for clients.

Rob Pountney, Managing Director of Murton Alexander and a water sport enthusiast who is a former wave ski world champion, said: “After Murton Alexander’s 50 years of business in Swansea, it was very important to keep our footprint here. As part of that vision, we wanted to ensure our staff and customers still benefit from a local broker relationship.

“I’ve known Gary Stevens for many years as we used to cross paths in his previous role, so I knew that Towergate would be a professional outfit that was the right fit for our business and customers.

“I see this as a great opportunity to come together to build our presence in Wales and also to tap into the strength and stature of the Towergate brand, and I’m looking forward to our future together.”

Gary Stevens, Towergate Area Director for Wales, said: “Rob and his team are well known as specialist local brokers, with a wealth of knowledge of the Swansea community. By bringing this expertise into our existing team we hope to be able to meet the ever-changing insurance and risk management needs of even more local clients.

“This acquisition also marks an exciting opportunity to strengthen our taxi specialism, building on our existing capabilities, relationships and knowledge.

“This is the latest in a line of exciting acquisitions and I’m always open to discussions with other brokers. These discreet conversations can often lead to exciting prospects for us and for them.”
