Staff and pupils at Cefn Cribwr Primary School are celebrating after being presented with the Eco Schools Platinum Green Flag Award.
Schools achieve platinum status once they have been awarded a Green Flag four times – demonstrating a long-term commitment to environmental education, student involvement and sustainability.
Since 2012, the school has been working to reduce energy consumption and boost its eco credentials. This has included litter picks in the local community as part of the Love It, Don’t Trash It! Campaign in conjunction with Bridgend County Borough Council, Keep Wales Tidy, SeaQuest and the community council.
Fruit trees and wildflowers have been planted around the grounds to encourage bees and there is a bike/scooter parking area with staff and youngsters encouraged to walk or cycle to and from school.
Headteacher Stephen Howells said: “This award is a reflection of the hard work of our Eco Council, pupils and staff in caring for the environment in and around our school.
“The Eco Council has introduced a number of measures including reusable water bottles to reduce plastic waste, as well as recycling paper, plastic and batteries, and turning off lights in rooms that are not being used. We have also worked with Dwr Cymru to look at ways we can reduce water consumption, and continue to monitor our energy use.
“Well done to the committee for presenting their work to Keep Wales Tidy as part of the accreditation process – we’re very proud to fly the platinum flag.”
