£50k Covid lifeline grant secured for iconic Swansea building

One of Swansea’s most historic buildings is to benefit from a £50,330 grant lifeline.

The money has been awarded to Morriston Tabernacle to help it with the challenges of the pandemic.

It will assist with the loss of income suffered as nearly all of the community groups have temporarily stopped meeting there and fund urgent maintenance work on the building.

The grant was secured by the Tabernacle Morriston Congregation charitable incorporated organisation, working with Swansea Council officers to make the Tabernacle a community focal point for future generations.

It was awarded to Tabernacle Morriston Congregation under the Welsh Government’s Cultural Recovery Fund for the heritage sector – and it follows a previous award of £64,200 for similar purposes.

Robert Francis-Davies, the council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “We’re working hard with partners to make the Tabernacle a powerful part of the community for many years to come – and this support will help.”

Tabernacle Morriston Congregation and the council wants the venue to have a bright future; phase one of an ongoing plan to revitalise its use was delivered recently.

The initiative has been warmly welcomed by the people of Morriston, including those who wish to run activities at the building and those who enjoy attending them.
