Llandudno man completes national three peaks challenge in under 24 hours

Rob Lloyd (57) from Rhos-On-Sea continues his 12-month ‘Senseless’ Challenge series for charity having completed The National Three Peaks challenge, which involves climbing the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales in the space of 24 hours.

Lloyd, who was diagnosed with blood cancer (lymphoma) two years ago and has just finished a course of treatment, is committing an entire year to undertaking a crazy and adrenaline-filled task each month in order to raise money in support of the charity ‘Sense.’

He was touched by the charity after hearing about a brave brother and sister who were born with complex disabilities.

Three-year-old Charlie and four-year-old Mia Clucas, who are supported at the Sense Family Centre in Peterborough, are unlikely ever to talk or walk and will need 24-hour care throughout their lives.

He said: “The weekend was exhausting, there were points that I really had to dig deep – the support of the people who have donated and thinking about the cause really helped me get through!”

“Balancing these crazy challenges alongside day-to-day life is very demanding but it’s all so worth it for such an amazing charity who do such wonderful work. There are lots of families like the Clucas’ who really need our support – any donations to Sense would be greatly appreciated.”

The effects of the pandemic are still being felt by the people that Sense support.

Isolation and loneliness have dramatically increased amongst disabled people over the last 12 months, with almost two thirds (61 per cent) now experiencing ‘chronic loneliness’. Over the same period, two out of five (41 per cent) disabled people say they have been unsupported by their local community.

Rob’s support of the charity has extended to helping the charity open nine new charity shops in Wales, with the intention of eventually acquiring 20 in total, bringing in vital income for charity.

To date Rob has taken on a James Bond Style skydive, spent a gruelling weekend with the SAS in the Brecon Beacons, concluded a six-hour bike ride, ran a 26-mile marathon around Colwyn Bay, descended the Orbit Tower’s 80-metre structure and now has accomplished the three-peaks challenge, with many more trying tests ahead.
