A temporary vehicular access road has been created from the A467 Rogerstone by-pass to Forge Mews following the emergency closure of Old Bassaleg Bridge.
To ensure safe entry and exit, the A467 has been reduced to one lane northbound and the speed limit reduced to 30mph.
Only vehicles needing to enter and exit Forge Mews are allowed to use the left-hand lane of the A467 between the Forge Road roundabout and Chartist Drive roundabout and this is clearly signposted.
Drivers travelling northbound on the A467 are asked to take care and be aware of vehicles merging from the left-hand lane.
Old Bassaleg Bridge was closed last Friday after a structural survey found it was unsafe and residents were advised to leave their homes as emergency vehicles could not reach Forge Mews.
Due to the urgency to ensure emergency vehicles could access the street, work began immediately to create temporary access and is now complete.
It means that Forge Mews residents who had chosen to leave their homes can now move back.
The road will remain in place until the completion of remedial works and Old Bassaleg Bridge is deemed safe to be reopened.
Work to repair the bridge will begin as soon as the assessment of the full surveys has been completed and a decision made on the best solution to the issue of the scour damage to the under foundation of the bridge which has put it at risk of collapse.
The new access route is for vehicles only (not mobility scooters). Pedestrian access remains available via the footbridge over the A467.
