Rhyl Town Council will stage its first event since February last year with a September Sizzler coming to the high street.

Heading up an action-packed day will be Granny Turismo (pictured), a pair of grannies with souped-up shopping trollies, intent on creating mischief and mayhem. The duo has performed worldwide in street shows right across Europe, but it will be the first time they have appeared in Rhyl.

Town mayor Cllr Diane King said: “Quite rightly, all events ended abruptly at the start of the pandemic. For the last six years, the town council has hosted free community events on the high street and elsewhere around Rhyl. They’ve been a highlight in our calendar, and we have missed bringing fun and games to the town.

“The September Sizzler is packed with things to do, and we can’t wait to bring back entertainment to Sunny Rhyl. We’re not complacent though and will be sensible about Covid measures. All the acts will follow safety measures, we’ll have hand sanitiser stations available, and activities will be spread out – all outdoors – to be as safe as we can.

“We’re also very grateful to the team at Costigan’s who are giving our acts space to use in between performances to help us meet the challenges of staging an event in the current climate. Things might be a little different but what’s not is our commitment to giving the people of Rhyl a good time.”

It’s not just Granny Turismo and their energetic act that will be tearing up the high street. Seaside games, circus skills, crafts, stilt walkers, living statues and music from the ever-popular Batala drumming band will feature in the line-up. A giant art installation called The Pentagon will also give people the chance to show their creative side with a giant piece of artwork made for the town.

Cllr King added: “Once again, all activities are free, and this is our way of saying thank you to the people of Rhyl for their patience and perseverance during the pandemic and to give them something to look forward to and enjoy after what has been a very difficult 18 months. We can’t wait to get back and put the show on the road.”

During the event, the town council will also be giving out the latest in its vintage pin badge collection with two new limited-edition badges up for grabs to the first 200 people along on the day.

The September Sizzler will be held on Rhyl High Street on Saturday September 4, 11am-4pm. To keep up to date with plans visit the council’s social media pages, @rhyltowncouncil
