Cardiff Tesco team raises over £2,300 for British Heart Foundation

Colleagues at Tesco Extra in Cardiff have raised £2,300.55 for the British Heart Foundation by completing a horse-trekking challenge.

The 15-strong team saddled up to tackle a challenging trek across the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons, covering 60 miles between them on Sunday 25th July.

Led by Clare Ollin, Tesco community champion at the store, the ambitious team of trekkers was supported by trek leader Sarah Griffiths and the rest of the crew at the Grange Pony Trekking Centre in Capel-Y-Fin, near Abergavenny.

For some, the fundraising expedition proved particularly challenging as this was their first time on horseback, though the novice riders were safe in the hands of more experienced horse riders in the group who kept spirits high by reminding the riders of the cause they had chosen to support.

Clare Ollin, community champion at the Tesco Extra store, said: “We wanted to do this fundraiser to celebrate the 60th birthday of the British Heart Foundation, a charity that is really close to all of our hearts.

“I’m really proud of everyone who took part, but especially of those who had never ridden before. Just getting on a horse for the first time can be quite scary, so it just shows how keen everyone was to be involved.

“I really want to thank Sarah and the team at the Grange Pony Trekking Centre for all their support, as we really couldn’t have done it without them. Sarah did an amazing job leading the trek and made it a real day to remember for all of us.

“We’re delighted to have raised such a lovely sum of money for the charity, and know it will really help. Thank you to everyone who donated.”

Claire Sadler, Executive Director, Marketing and Fundraising at the British Heart Foundation said: “It’s wonderful to hear that staff from the Tesco Extra store in Cardiff have raised over £2,300 to help mark the British Heart Foundation’s 60th birthday.  A huge thank you to everyone involved.

“The BHF has achieved so much over the past 60 years and funded ground breaking discoveries including pacemakers and genetic testing for inherited heart conditions. But we’re not ready to stop yet as heart and circulatory diseases still kill 1 in 4 in the UK.

“The Covid-19 pandemic cut last year’s funding for new research in half so support like this is invaluable.”
