Some of Gwynedd’s young residents recently took part in the High Sheriff’s Charity Golf Competition held at Porthmadog Golf Club. The event was to raise money for PACT (North Wales Police and Community Trust) and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, selected by this Year’s High Sheriff of Gwynedd, Gwyn Peredur Owen.
The Ieuenctid Gwynedd golf team, which included Tomos Dobson, Jamie Williams and Siôn Endaf Parry, was one of 14 teams that took part on the day. The team was sponsored by Councillor Simon Glyn, Chairman of Gwynedd Council with youth worker Andrew Owen keeping a close eye on the score.
Also present on the day to lend a hand were a group of young volunteers from Ysgol Eifionydd, under the supervision of youth worker Nia Rees. Nia works with them as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and this was an opportunity for them to gain the experience of volunteering in the community.
After a close competition, it was the Ieuenctid Gwynedd golf team who came through as the winners. The group of young volunteers were also rewarded for their efforts, being invited to a golf coaching session with Mark Pilkington, a professional golfer at the club.
Councillor Simon Glyn, Chairman of Gwynedd Council, said: “This is excellent news, and deserves great praise. I am so proud of their success and will be arranging to congratulate them in person, in due course.”
Nia Rees, Youth Worker, said: “I’m so pleased that the young people from Ysgol Eifionydd enjoyed the volunteering experience during the competition. Most certainly the highlight for them was attending the golf training session with Mark Pilkington.
“I think the experience has created some budding golfers for the future!”
Andrew Owen, Youth Worker, added: “I would like to thank Tomos, Jamie and Siôn for taking part in the competition and to congratulate them on winning the competition!
“I would also like to personally thank Councillor Simon Glyn for sponsoring us and allowing the young people to have this wonderful opportunity to enter the competition – a very good choice in the end sponsoring the winners!”
Councillor Dilwyn Morgan, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “It’s great to hear about the success of this charity golf competition at Porthmadog golf club, and that the young people of the area played an important part on the day. I would like to thank the young volunteers for their hard work and am pleased to hear that they enjoyed the golf coaching session afterwards.

The charity golf competition raised over £4,000 towards the good causes.
