Important work will shortly begin at the Wattstown Standard Tip to manage the potential for a future landslip at the privately-owned site – thanks to a partnership between The Coal Authority, Welsh Government and the Council.
The scheme is scheduled to start in the week commencing Monday, October 18. The Welsh Government will underwrite the cost of all eligible works to enable The Coal Authority to undertake the work, via a Service Level Agreement with the Council. Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd has been appointed by the Coal Authority as the contractor to deliver the scheme.
A landslip occurred at the privately-owned colliery spoil tip in Wattstown during poor weather in December 2020. This was highly-visible from the surrounding area, with the elevated spoil face overly steep and exposed to the elements. The tip has continued to deteriorate following this initial slip.
The site has been regularly monitored and inspected, through joint working between The Coal Authority, Welsh Government and the Council. A proposal to protect the face of the tip and help in managing its further deterioration has now been developed by The Coal Authority, and works will now take place following agreement with the landowner.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “Working with Welsh Government and The Coal Authority, the Council continues to monitor its former colliery sites as a priority – particularly in light of increased rainfall brought by Climate Change. There were concerns raised about the privately-owned Wattstown Standard Tip following a routine inspection after Storm Dennis, and it has continued to be regularly inspected.
“Partnership working between the Council, Welsh Government and The Coal Authority since the landslip occurred in December 2020 has continued to closely monitor the site, assess its condition, and identify any further causes for concern. This has been carried out to ensure the community is protected, and also to reassure local residents that the site is being effectively managed.
“A scheme is now being brought forward to deliver emergency works, funded by Welsh Government and delivered by The Coal Authority. Residents will notice works activity on site from next week, taking advantage of the better weather conditions before the winter months arrive.”
