Young people from Ceredigion have travelled to Patagonia to explore its Welsh heritage as part of celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of the Ceredigion Youth Council.

Nine young people and four staff members took part in the 10-day visit to Argentina, which was made possible through funding from Taith, the Welsh Government’s international learning exchange programme.

The trip brought together current and former members of the Youth Council and gave them the opportunity to learn more about the history, culture and legacy of Welsh settlers in Patagonia.

The first Welsh settlers arrived in the region aboard the Mimosa in 1865, beginning a connection between Wales and Patagonia which continues more than 160 years later.

As part of the visit, the Ceredigion group travelled to Puerto Madryn, where they explored the historic landing site of the Mimosa.

They also visited Trelew and Gaiman, two towns which remain closely associated with Welsh heritage in Argentina.

Early Welsh settlers established communities in the area and helped preserve elements of Welsh culture, language and traditions which continue today.

Interim Youth Work and Engagement Manager Gavin Witte said: “This inspiring visit gave young people a life-changing opportunity to connect with the people, culture and landscape of Patagonia. The experiences, friendships and kindness shared by the local community are memories they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.”

The trip also gave participants the chance to see first-hand how the Welsh language remains part of communities thousands of miles away from Wales.

Ela, one of the young people who took part, said: “This has been a fantastic trip. I’ve learned that the Welsh language remains at the heart of communities in places such as Gaiman and Trelew. I was also fortunate enough to celebrate my birthday while we were here. I would like to thank Ceredigion Youth Service and the staff for providing such an incredible experience.”

The visit formed part of celebrations marking a decade of Ceredigion Youth Council and its work to give young people opportunities to have their voices heard.

Organisers said the trip provided a fitting milestone for the anniversary by celebrating the historic links between Wales and Patagonia while giving young people the opportunity to experience different cultures and perspectives.

The group also experienced Patagonia’s wildlife during a visit to Puerto Pirámides.

Councillor Wyn Thomas, Cabinet Member for Schools, Lifelong Learning and Skills said: “I am immensely proud of the young people who took part in this visit. Through a programme of cultural exchange, learning and exploration, they have gained valuable experiences and new perspectives that will stay with them throughout their lives. The opportunity to witness Patagonia’s remarkable marine wildlife in Puerto Pirámides was a particular highlight, and I would like to thank Taith for supporting an initiative that continues to strengthen the historic friendship between Wales and Patagonia.”
