Caerphilly County Borough Council has announced it intends to begin work to demolish the vacant former GP surgery at Lansbury Park, Caerphilly.
The building, which is surrounded by council owned land, became vacant when the previous GP retired, and no prospective owners expressed interest in the property.
A decision was taken by the council to purchase the property so that it could be merged with its surrounding assets. The property was not considered appropriate for the delivery of alternative services due to its condition and configuration and so a decision was made to proceed with demolition to avoid the building falling into disrepair and becoming a potential magnet for anti-social behaviour.
The council is currently exploring future options for the site and community consultation will be carried out throughout the process.
Cllr Shayne Cook, the council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care and Housing, said “Significant investment has been made into Lansbury Park over recent years as part of a targeted regeneration project, in partnership with residents. We’re committed to ensuring the local community continue to play a key role in plans for Lansbury Park and this space.
“We also recognise that this space has also been used as a place of commemoration for a tragedy which occurred in Lansbury Park some years ago. We’d like to offer our assurance that the commemorative plaque currently located within the building will be professionally removed and securely stored, until an alternative location is agreed with the family and local community.”
