A performance programme focusing on what it means to be a young person in Wales is to hit the stage with the production’s star-studded team urging the region’s young talent to sign up and act out a Welsh BAFTA-winning writer’s latest script.
The production, entitled ‘A Day In The Life Of Us’, is to run at Denbigh-based Theatr Twm o’r Nant on 2 and 3 April, with young Welsh actors aged between 14 and 24 encouraged to sign up to perform.
Critically acclaimed writer and director Janys Chambers and combat artist and assistant director Tom Conwy are looking to bring on board up to 30 young people to take the stage and receive performance coaching from industry professionals.
The script was inspired by the experiences shared in nine workshops across Wales which encouraged participants to explore identity through storytelling and performance, and which Janys then wove into the plot of the play.
Tom, who grew up in St Asaph before working on combat-based productions at sites such as Warwick Castle, said: “Growing up in North Wales, I know there is real talent within the region, but like many rural areas, it’s easy for young people to fall through the cracks when it comes to opportunities in the creative industries.
“From assisting in the workshop sessions, it was clear that the younger generation enjoy being creative, and coming out of these isolating last few years, it’s important we encourage them no matter their level of experience.”
The project is supported by CADW and funded by the Welsh Government’s Winter of Wellbeing initiative, which aims to support Wales’ youth as the country begins to recover from the pandemic.
Janys, who co-won a Welsh BAFTA for Best Drama Series said: “During the workshops, the attendees’ ideas were expressed differently, whether it was through drama, art, or story-telling. But it was apparent that everyone we worked with is experiencing some sort of form of anxiety.
“We are passionate about providing young people with the opportunities to grow their damaged confidence and develop their skillsets.
“This theatre-making course aims to cover a wide range life skills that will enhance employability. Students will learn exactly what goes into making a theatre production, learning first-hand from professionals in the industry and then get to perform what they’ve learned in front of a live audience alongside professional actors.”
Rehearsals will take place daily from 19 March to 1 April between 10am and 6pm, with two Tuesdays off on 22 and 29 March, and those wishing to take part will require permission from their school or college if applicable, and their guardian.
Each performer will receive £10 toward travel and food expenses for each day they attend.
Those who are interested are invited to attend an Introduction Day at Theatr Twm o’r Nant on Sunday 13 March between 10am and 6pm to learn more about the play and meet the team.
