Access to Swansea’s West Pier is due to be considerably improved for the enjoyment of thousands of people in the coming months and years.
Located close to the River Tawe barrage and Ferrara Quay in the SA1 area of the city, a pathway that leads to the pier will be reinstated under new plans to improve the environment in the area.
The project will follow-on from Swansea Council reaching an in-principle agreement for the land with Associated British Ports (ABP).
Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: “The pathway that leads to the West Pier has been overrun for some time by sand dunes, making access difficult for many people.
“Working closely in partnership with Associated British Ports, the project that’s now planned will reinstate that pathway, making it far easier for people of all abilities to reach the pier and enjoy the breathtaking sea views it provides.
“It’s part of a broader plan to improve the look and feel of the area there for the benefit of local residents and visitors to the city, helping further make the most of Swansea’s stunning coastal location.”
Robert Gray, ABP’s Swansea Port Manager, said: “We are really pleased to be working in partnership with Swansea Council to ensure public access to the West Pier. Last year ABP successfully completed the structural engineering works on the West Pier following storm damage. This next step makes perfect sense and the collaborative approach will not only allow access to a popular location but also enhance the area.”
Subject to finalising funding and approvals for the path reinstatement plans, work could start in the coming months.
