Which Diseases Are Covered Under Health Insurance?

Health policies can cover many conditions under their plans, particularly pre-existing conditions. One of the primary reasons people opt to get health insurance is to avoid substantial out-of-pocket medical costs.

Also, with the rise of health problems and unhealthy lifestyles in the current decade, more and more people find themselves at high risk for the diseases mentioned below. This is not a surprise, mainly since, according to the World Health Organization, the causes of health vulnerabilities include physical inactivity, harmful alcohol consumption, and unhealthy diets, more seen in the 21st century.

This is undoubtedly a cause for worry that makes preventative measures such as getting the needed health insurance more critical.

    Benefits of Getting Health Coverage

Other than getting the needed money for potential substantial medical costs, another advantage of having health coverage is getting fees to pay for treatments that are not always covered by traditional policies.

Other daily living expenses can also be paid through the policy when not used in its entirety. The critically ill can then focus on recovery instead of being anxious to get back on track and earn money to pay the bills.

Pre-Existing Conditions Covered Under UK Health Insurance

It is important to note that specific pre-existing conditions are mostly being covered by UK health insurers, provided that underwriting criteria and the evaluation are favourable for the client. Here are some of them:

    1. Psoriasis

Affecting 2% of the population of the UK, this condition can start at any age but affects most adults under 35. The skin disease is characterised by flaky, red, crusty patches of skin, sometimes with silvery scales.

It is important to note that coverage related to this condition might differ from person to person. Psoriasis might be a minor health issue for some people, while the quality of life can significantly affect others.

    2. Fibrocystic Breast Disease

This disease, not to be confused with breast cancer, is characterised by breast lumps caused by fibrocystic changes. Women who suffer from this condition might have breast pain or might feel that they have lumpy breasts.

In the UK, these cysts often occur in women in their 40s. Hence, the NHS advises that it is best not to self-diagnose any breast lumps and see a GP right away.

    3. Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease. Any change in food, water, or climate can easily upset the bowels of one who lives with this disease because parts of the digestive system are inflamed.

Fortunately, most UK insurance companies consider this a covered pre-existing condition. More than 100,000 peoplelive with this condition in the UK alone, found in people aged 16 to 30.

    4. Diabetes

Another condition meant to be managed lifelong, diabetes, occurs when a person’s blood sugar levels are too high. There are two types: Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

More people have Type 2 diabetes (around 90% of all adults) in the UK. This happens when the body cannot produce enough insulin or one’s cells are not reactive to it.

    5. Hypertension

Also known as having high blood pressure, this condition significantly increases one’s risk of having more health problems.

According to the UK’s NHS, one-third of adults have this condition, even without realising it. Those more at risk for this condition are overweight people, people who do not exercise, and people who drink alcohol and caffeine excessively.

Smoking and having too much salt on one’s food are culprits, too. This is why it is advised to have one screened through regular NHS Health Checks.

    6. Asthma

Asthma is one of the common conditions in the lung that presents with breathing difficulties. More than 5 million people in the UK receive ongoing treatment for it, with a severe asthma attack being diagnosed every 10 seconds.

    A Critical Catch

All in all, there is almost no reason to neglect to get health insurance, especially one with a specialised package or one that honours the pre-existing diseases mentioned above. Most UK insurance providers now cover other pre-existing conditions, including acne, arthritis, eczema, and glaucoma.

Remember: illness can strike anytime, even to healthy individuals, due to autoimmune diseases and other unfortunate instances.

It is also a reality that one of the common causes of bankruptcy is the inability to pay medical bills. As such, it would be a wise move for one who already has a family history of these diseases to secure that health insurance package.

It is a critical catch that can make or break one’s life, finances, and chances of recovery. The flexibility it accords in how funds are used is also a bonus.

Get that health insurance and disclose all information needed regarding your pre-existing conditions. With insurance reforms ongoing, you’ll thank yourself for it一and your family will, too.
