A driver has been arrested after a police pursuit through Newport ended when a vehicle crashed into a roundabout.

Gwent Police’s Roads Policing and Dog Section said the pursuit was authorised during a night shift after the vehicle was seen driving dangerously.

During the pursuit, the vehicle was driven well above the speed limit, ignored red traffic lights and repeatedly travelled on the wrong side of the road.

Police said the chase ended when the vehicle crashed into a roundabout.

Although all of the occupants escaped injury, officers said the passengers fled the scene on foot. The driver, however, was unable to leave the vehicle because of the damage caused in the collision.

Checks carried out by officers found the driver was not old enough to hold a driving licence.

The driver was arrested and has since been released under investigation while forensic enquiries into suspected intoxication continue.

They are being investigated on suspicion of:

    • Dangerous driving
    • Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence
    • Driving without insurance
    • Driving while unfit through drugs

Gwent Police has not released any further details about the incident or the identity of those involved.
