5 Signs That You Should See an Ophthalmologist Right Away

Eye health is something you can’t afford to neglect. We are only born with one pair of eyes and few issues can have as direct and profound an effect on our quality of life as severe eye problems. The issue is that eye problems tend to develop slowly, and when the symptoms start to get serious, it’s often because it’s too late. This is why you need to see an eye doctor regularly and go immediately if you notice anything strange going on with your eyes. Let’s take a look at some clear signs that you might need to see an ophthalmologist.

Direct Contact with Foreign Objects or Substances

If you are at the beach and get sand in your eyes, it’s good to rinse it out right away and protect your eyes, but a lot worse could happen afterward. An infection could form, or you could have some lesion you aren’t aware of. This is why you need to see a doctor as soon as possible after your eyes come into contact with any form of grit, dirt, or chemical.

Rinse your eyes with fresh clean water for at least 15 minutes after they have been in contact with a foreign object or substance. Do not rub the eyes to prevent the spread of a possible infection or cause additional damage. If the object remains lodged in your eyes, you shouldn’t attempt to remove it on your own. This is one of the cases where you will need to see an eye doctor that can perform surgery fast.

One example of such a clinic is the Circle Health Group. They have clinics all over the county and will offer all sorts of ophthalmology emergency treatments. They are one of the biggest and most well-known ophthalmology clinics and will be able to examine you on the spot and tell you what procedures will need to be performed or the steps you need to take.

    Eye Pain

It’s perfectly normal to experience mild eye pain from time to time, especially if you look at screens for long periods or work in an environment that is stressful to the eyes. However, if the pain is frequent or intense and you feel things like pressure behind your eyes, then this is a clear sign that you should go to an ophthalmologist. Pain can be a sign of a growing infection, but it could be something much worse. It could be caused by sun damage, for instance, or a serious issue like glaucoma. Glaucoma can become irreversible after a while, so you must see a doctor the minute you notice persistent symptoms.

    Eye Fatigue

Eye fatigue is another issue that is not always serious but should get special attention if persistent. If you work on a computer and you experience eye fatigue, we suggest that you follow the 20/20/20 rule. The way the rule works is simple. All you have to do is stop after every 20 minutes of continuous screen activity and look at an object that is at least 20 ft away for 20 seconds. You can then get back to work. If you continue to experience eye fatigue or you get it when you’re not working or looking at a screen, then you should seek medical help.

    Blurry Vision

If you notice that your vision is blurry from time to time or it’s a constant issue, then go see a doctor. It might be a sign that your vision is deteriorating and that you need a prescription. It could also be a sign of something more serious. Blurry vision isn’t always a reflection of an issue with your eyes per se. Blood sugar levels will also affect vision. This means that your blurry vision could come from a disorder like hypoglycaemia or untreated diabetes. Only an ophthalmologist will be able to tell you if the issue is with your eye or not. If the pain is in one eye only and comes and goes randomly, however, then it’s often an eye issue. So, visit a doctor for an exam if that happens and listen to what they have to say.

    Itchy, Dry Eyes

This one is tricky because most people will suffer some sort of eye irritation from time to time. You may inadvertently rub your eye and get some foreign substance in it without knowing, or environmental conditions may trigger it, like extreme dryness or seasonal allergies. But, if the issue is persistent, you may have what is called dry eye, which is a chronic issue. You will need to see an ophthalmologist right away so they can provide you with at-home or non-invasive in-office treatments.

These are some of the eye conditions that should warrant immediate medical attention. The more you wait, the greater the risk of complications, so don’t take eye issues lightly and go see a doctor as soon as possible if you notice any irregularities.
