RCT Council will host a public exhibition at Rhondda Fach Leisure Centre to provide more information about the next stage of the Tylorstown landslip project – which proposes to remediate the remaining material on the hillside.
The four-phase Tylorstown Landslip Remediation Plan was agreed following the landslip in February 2020, which took place in the unprecedented weather of Storm Dennis. Emergency drainage work was completed shortly after the event (Phase One), while embankment scour repairs (Phase Two), removal of material from the valley floor to receptor sites, and reinstatement of two paths running through the site (Phase Three) were completed in summer 2021.
The next phase (Phase Four) proposes remediating the remaining tip on the hillside to make it safe – a major element of the Plan which requires planning permission. Informed by a public consultation in early 2022, Officers are now finalising the planning application, which will be submitted to the Council soon for formal consideration by the Planning and Development Committee.
In order to keep the local community fully-informed and up-to-date with the latest progress, the Council will host a public exhibition day on Thursday, May 19, from 10am to 8pm at Rhondda Fach Leisure Centre, Tylorstown.
Everyone is welcome to ‘drop-in’ throughout the day, and no prior booking is required. Officers will be able to answer questions and provide information about the progress made to date and the planning application for Phase Four.
Subject to full approval from the planning committee, the Council would conduct preliminary works over winter 2022 ahead of the main work starting in spring 2023. Completion of Phase Four would enable future enhancements to the local community route and the creation of a riverside park at this location.
Roger Waters, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Director, Frontline Services, said: “Rectifying the damage caused by the Tylorstown landslip remains a Council priority, along with improving active travel links for wider community as part of the remediation process to make the area safe. Having completed the first three phases of work by June 2021, additional activity to stabilise the slope over the remaining closed footpath took place in the autumn. This is the latest work on site to date, as we now look towards developing Phase Four.
“This phase of work will focus on remediating the remaining tip on the hillside, in order to make the area safe. It represents a significant element of the overall Remediation Plan, and the community was able to have its say in a Pre Application Consultation held in January and February 2022, which was a valuable exercise to shape the Council’s final planning application.
“With that application now almost ready to be submitted, the Council is hosting a public exhibition where residents can meet with Officers to find out more – as we continue to keep the community fully-informed at every step of the process. I’d urge those residents who are interested about the process to visit the exhibition, which is an all-day ‘drop-in’ event being held at Rhondda Fach Leisure Centre on May 19.
