Neath Port Talbot Council’s Trading Standards Department is encouraging local businesses to sign up with the nationally recognised trader approval scheme Buy with Confidence.

It was set up around 20 years ago by a partnership of local authority Trading Standards services in response to concerns about “rogue traders” and a general wish to raise the standards across certain trade sectors.

The Buy With Confidence brand has been developed so people will associate its logo with businesses they can trust and rely on and the scheme is already well established – now operating in more than 50 counties and boroughs from Cornwall to Argyll & Bute.

The scheme applies to most consumer-facing sectors – everything from home improvements and repair garages to computer repairs and chimney sweeps. All businesses coming under the Buy with Confidence scheme have been vetted, approved and will continue to be monitored by Trading Standards to help ensure customers receive a quality service.

Businesses are only included once they’ve completed a series of stringent checks, including a visit by a qualified Trading Standards professional. Those working in and around people’s homes will also be criminal record checked.

In a new call for businesses to sign up to the not-for-profit scheme, Neath Port Talbot Council is offering the first 10 businesses a 50% discounted annual fee (In the first year only). See fee information below:

    0-6 Employees – full rate £308.40 (with 50% discount £154.20)
    6-20 Employees – full rate £462 (with discount £231)
    21-49 Employees – full rate £615.60 (with discount £307.80)
(There is also a one-off £100 fee to cover administrative checks)

What you get from Buy With Confidence:
    • Ability to use the Buy With Confidence logo saying you’re Trading Standards approved and it’s a chance to set yourself apart from competitors.
    • Reassurance for customers you’re trustworthy and provide good customer service and company name listed in a public website directory.
    • Trading Standards check-up and help before admission and access to bespoke advice from trading standards professionals.
    • Information on any law changes that could affect your business.
    • Help in protecting your community from rogue traders and illegitimate businesses.

A council spokesperson said: “We would recommend local businesses sign up with Buy With Confidence because it’s devoted to ensuring customers are treated fairly and get value for money and it also helps ensure that those traders who act dishonestly are increasingly isolated.”
