RNLI lifeguards return to Rest Bay alongside new technology

RNLI lifeguards have now returned to Rest Bay, joining Coney / Sandy Bay and Trecco Bay which are already patrolled daily by the charity’s lifeguards between 10am-6pm.

Rest Bay will also be kitted out with the latest technology, which will help to make the beach even safer.

Visitors can scan QR codes, which will then provide up to date accurate information about the current conditions.

The patrols are jointly funded by Bridgend County Borough Council and Parkdean Resorts, with the RNLI covering additional costs through their national and local fundraising activity.

The key summer safety advice is:

    • Visit a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags
    • If you get into trouble Float to Live – lie on your back and relax, resisting the urge to panic
    • Call 999 or 112 in an emergency and ask for the Coastguard
    • Always keep your children under supervision
    • Avoid swimming alone
    • Coastal areas can be an unpredictable environment, you should bear in mind that water temperatures can remain very cold, increasing the risk of cold water shock

There is also a lifejacket clinic at Porthcawl Marina/Harbour on Sunday 19 June from 9am with the RNLI. The clinic is a free to attend and will show people how to maintain personal lifejackets to keep them fully functioning.

There will also be a demonstration on how to check for wear and tear and how to do simple maintenance tasks like replacing gas bottles and firing heads.

“We are expecting this summer to be very busy for our lifeguards and volunteer lifeboat crews.

With stunning scenery and spectacular beaches right on our doorstep, we are certain many people will flock to the coastlines, but we want people to enjoy them in the right manner. We urge everyone to respect the water, think about their own safety and know what to do in an emergency.

Cllr Neelo Farr, Porthcawl East Central and Cabinet Member for Regeneration
