A dedicated army of staff and volunteers have helped deliver over two million free school meals to families across the Caerphilly county borough since the start of the pandemic.

Caerphilly Council has received national praise for its ambitious approach, which has ensured that eligible children and their families received healthy and nutritious food parcels delivered direct to their doorstep.

As well as getting a variety of tasty ready meal options, local families also received bread, milk, fresh fruit and vegetables.

The impressive statistics to date include:

    Frees School Meals delivered 2,124,030
    Meals delivered weekly 36,490
Children receiving Free School Meals 7,298
Miles travelled by delivery team 78,000
    Volunteers 100
Vehicles needed to deliver each week 220

Cllr Sean Morgan, Leader of Council said “With so many families currently experiencing the devastating effects of the cost-of-living crisis, I’m proud to see that our free school meal programme has made such a positive difference to so many people.

“Seeing volunteers from across the council and our partner agencies working together to support our residents, in what has been a huge logistical task, truly embodies the Team Caerphilly ethos and I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts,” he added.

The delivery teams carried out the final deliveries this week ahead of the school summer holidays.
