Bridgend County Borough Council has welcomed news that work has started on a new active travel route which will link Waterton to a new strategic employment site at Brocastle.

The £2m route, which is being funded by Welsh Government, runs parallel with the A48 for about two kilometres and incorporates a cycleway, signalised road crossings, replacement traffic signals, street lighting, new kerbing, surfacing works and more.

Expected to be complete by early autumn, the new route will mark the completion of the wider infrastructure works at the Brocastle site where £10m has been invested into transforming 116 acres and outline planning consent has been provided for up to 770,000 square feet of floor space.

Intended to aid economic growth and job creation, the Brocastle site is being marketed to attract fresh investment from modern businesses, and Welsh Government has confirmed that discussions are already taking place over a number of offers.

The recent impact of rising fuel costs serves to underline both the increasing need to find new ways of making short journeys and the growing importance of active travel routes.

The Brocastle development site offers an exciting opportunity to attract new businesses into the area so that it can benefit from fresh investment and employment, and I am sure that the new route will play a valuable role in this process.

I am delighted to see that work on the new route has started, and I am looking forward to its completion later in the year.”

Councillor John Spanswick, Cabinet Member for Communities
