More children than ever have taken part in this summer’s Food and Fun school holiday scheme in Neath Port Talbot.

Food and Fun, which is run each year by Neath Port Talbot Council’s Youth Service, gives children the chance to take part in various fun and physical activities, learn about food and nutrition, as well receiving a healthy breakfast and lunch.

St Joseph’s Catholic School and Cefn Saeson Comprehensive joined the scheme this year to bring the total to seven schools, delivering the scheme to more than 350 children.

To help deliver the activities that run throughout the programme, the schools teamed up with Swansea University, NPT Pass, Swansea Bay University Health Board, University of Wales Trinity St. David, Youth Service and the council’s Play Team. Together, they helped deliver activities such as five-a-side football, arts and crafts, interactive lessons about nutrition, table tennis, tag archery as well as arranging day trips.

Councillor Nia Jenkins, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Training, said: “I am delighted that more schools have come on board this year to give more children the chance to benefit from the Food and Fun scheme.

“It’s a terrific way of making the most of school facilities during the holidays by giving children something fun to do as well as ensuring they receive a healthy, nutritious meal.

“As a council, we are committed to ensuring all children get the best start in life, and this is a great example of how we striving to achieve it.”

The scheme is funded by Welsh Government and delivered by local authorities in partnership with the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) to provide support to those from disadvantaged areas.
