Children at Ysgol Bae Baglan were proud to welcome Hollywood star Michael Sheen to hear about the school holiday scheme they attend.

The visit was an opportunity for Michael to hear about how the School Holiday Enrichment Programme (SHEP) uses school facilities during the summer holidays to encourage children between the ages of 9 to 11 to become more active, eat healthily and develop friendships. Everyone who attends the programme is given a healthy breakfast and lunch, and takes part in a number of physical, educational and enrichment sessions throughout the day.

During the visit, Michael sat in on one of the educational workshops where the children were learning about the gory details of what medicines and instruments were used by the Royal Navy during battles in the 18th century. Michael then joined the children during their break-time where he had a number of ‘selfies’ and answered questions about his latest film roles.

Councillor Peter Rees, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Culture, said:

“We were delighted to welcome Michael Sheen to Ysgol Bae Baglan. He was able to hear first-hand about how this exciting initiative is supporting young people to make new friends and encourage positive attitudes towards their health and diet.

“The School Holiday Enrichment Programme is a prime example of how the Council is working to ensure we give all young people the chance to reach their potential and maximise their well-being.”

SHEP is a joint funded scheme between Neath Port Talbot Council and the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA). A number of partner organisations also support in delivering the scheme such as the Mid and West Wales Fire Service, South Wales Police, Swansea City Football Club, CADW, Healthy Schools, NPT Physical Activity Sports Service, NPT Children and Families Team, ABMU Health Board Dietetics, school nurses, NPT Youth Service, Healthy Schools and WCADA (Welsh Centre for Action on Dependency and Addiction).
