    Penallta Reuse Shop Officially Opens

Local primary school children declared Penallta Reuse Shop open during an official launch last week.

The former Penallta Depot has been transformed into a Reuse Shop. This flagship facility provides a great opportunity for items once destined for the Household Waste Recycling Centre to be reused and sold at bargain prices.

The Reuse Shop has been launched in partnership with South Wales based charity, Wastesavers. Wastesavers currently have nine Reuse Shops in operation throughout South Wales, however Penallta Reuse Shop is the first to open in the Caerphilly County Borough.

Members of the local community, along with key environmental groups attended the official opening, which included a tour of the facilities, a demonstration of how the facility helps to create a circular economy and a reading of “Elves and the Mess Monster” performed by local school children.

The event also included a CCBC Cost-of-Living Roadshow offering visitors the chance to speak with council staff who can help with any problems residents may have including benefits, housing, debt and food support.

Cllr Sean Morgan, the Council’s Leader, said “We are thrilled to announce the official opening of Penallta Reuse Shop.

“Whilst the Reuse Shop forms part of our extended offer to reduce, reuse, repair and recycle and is the next step in our journey to becoming a carbon neutral authority, reuse also brings a number of social and economic benefits such as offering shoppers the opportunity to find good quality items for great prices, which is now more important than ever.”

Alun Harries, Charity Manager at Wastesavers adds: “Last year our Reuse Shops throughout South Wales found new homes for over 416,000 items, which would have otherwise been sent to recycling skips. Reuse has enormous environmental benefits, and reusing household items saves even more energy – we should all have a facility and resource to do it’

“As a charity we work towards a triple bottom line of environmental, social and economic sustainability. We work in partnership with local authorities and any profits that are made support our social inclusion and education programmes.”

Penallta Reuse Shop is located at Penallta Industrial Estate, South Road, Hengoed, CF82 7ST and is open seven days a week, 9:30-4:30.
