Plans for a brand new community living scheme for older people have been brought to life in a new computer-generated ‘fly-through’ of the development in Riverside.

The scheme, which gained planning approval in December 2021, is part of the Council’s ambitious new build programme to deliver more affordable housing in the city, and will provide flexible, sustainable, low-carbon accommodation for older residents to help maintain their independence in their own homes for longer.

The new short film gives a glimpse of how the 41 apartment building and community facility will look on Leckwith Road, on the site of the current community hall there. Showcasing the exterior and external areas of the development that will deliver 41 new apartments, a modern and flexible community hall, new Multi-use games area (MUGA), attractive landscaping and a much larger community garden.

Encon Construction Limited will begin work on the scheme, which will also include range of communal facilities to support independent living and help combat social isolation amongst older people, this Spring with completion expected in late summer 2024.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: “The new CGI fly-through of our community living scheme on Leckwith Road shows an impressive new building that will transform this part of the community. The scheme has been designed to a very high standard and that is clear to see in the film.

“I look forward to seeing the scheme develop in reality very soon and even more so to its completion, when residents and people in the local community will benefit from a brand new, highly sustainable, community asset.”

At its meeting last week (Thursday March 2) Cabinet approved the appropriation of land on the site of the former community centre, and adjacent car park, from the General Fund to the Housing Revenue Account for the development of this scheme.
