Llanedeyrn subway brightened up thanks to new school mural

A splash of colour and good measure of community partnership working has brightened up the walk to school for pupils and families in Llanedeyrn.

A vibrant new mural has been painted on a subway in the area close to St Philip Evans RC Primary School, thanks to a collaboration between the schoolchildren, the Council’s Caretaking Services and Cardiff-based mural company, Wall-op Murals.

The Council’s graffiti removal team cleaned and jet-washed the subway, which suffered frequent vandalism and was in desperate need of some TLC, to prepare the space for its mini-makeover.

The mural was then created by children from St Philip Evans Primary, a short distance away from the subway under Llanedeyrn Drive, and Wall-op Murals.

The design was informed and inspired by children and showcases what they enjoy so much about their school. More than 50 children took part in creative activities which helped paint a picture of what makes their school community so special. Paint for the project was donated by R&M Williams, one of the Council’s contractors.

The mural has been well-received by the local community, including of course the children involved in its creation who have commented: “My favourite thing is the bright colours and how the drawings show all the rights we learn about in school”, “In school, we say ‘kind hands, kind words, kind feet, kind hearts’. It’s nice that you’ve included that” and “Look! it’s our school logo, that’s cool”.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: “What a fabulous community-led project this has been. Our caretaking services team have been more than happy to be a part of this collaboration to give this rundown subway a fresh start – and it looks excellent.

“Well done to the children for inspiring and creating this new piece of public art for the community to enjoy. It certainly makes the walk to school a lot more pleasant.”
