Cardiff Council has appointed a new warden to look after Flat Holm island just off the Vale of Glamorgan coast.

Simon will be looking after the unique habitat and historic buildings on the Site of Special Scientific Interest, 5 miles off the coast of Cardiff, in the Bristol Channel. Simon replaces the former warden Pierre.

Life on the island can be tough, but Simon’s love of climbing, endurance running, wild camping and nature has previously seen him complete a hike from Mexico to Canada and clock up 110 miles in 24 hour running events, plus he’s volunteered on the island previously, so he’s looking forward to the challenge.

A former Royal Navy helicopter engineer, who has also worked as an engineer for the Red Arrows, Simon discovered his passion for conservation while volunteering with wildlife trusts and becoming a Wildlife Trust Ranger.

Speaking about his new role, Simon said: “I’m excited about meeting the wide variety of people who visit and hearing their stories, the change through the seasons, seeing the wildlife come and go, and helping people understand the importance of our rare habitats.”
